He has represented Taiwan in the 1997 Venice Biennale and in a number of international exhibitions. Besides being engaged in little theatre and film, he teaches art history, writes art criticism and works as a curator. He won a Golden Horse Award nomination for Best Art Direction for his work in Edward Yang’s film A Confucian Confusion. His works mainly deal with the absurdity of human existence. Representative works include his Action Series. As a temporary organization, Lost Society Document (LSD) is a photography workshop led by Yao Jui-chung. He advocates university students to photograph and survey in their hometowns. About 50 members participate in this project, and all of them are the students choosing to study in Yao Jui-chung’s classes about “contemporary visual aesthetics” and “performance and conceptual art”. Through the way of field survey, they attempt to draw the outline of “mosquito houses” which have been criticized a lot, and practise the possibility of observing the society by means of art.
