Amid the grand opening of the Hong Kong Photography Festival 2010, exhibition on ‘First Photos of Hong Kong`, sponsored by the Canon Group, uncovers the beginning of photography in Hong Kong, followed by the prominent exhibition “Four Dimensions-Contemporary Photography from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan & Macau” introducing the recent development. In line with the merging of the contemporary art among different media, the transforming art forms of photography are fascinating which can be incorporated in films and dance performances. In the upcoming exhibition, there are a number of multi-media works that appear as the incorporation of photography and video. Photography is no longer purely aesthetics or documentaries. It can be viewed as studies of humanities. For instance, the Taiwanese photographer, Chou Ching Hui, had spent three years studying the meaning and image of computer to the children in villages in China. Through pictures, drawings and paintings, these children had depicted their dreams. As for Chinese photographers Zhuang Hui and Dan’er even opened a real photography studio in the deserted city Yumen, providing services to be found in any other studio of the kind. They transplanted the photography studio and its results into the context of the art space. To the Hong Kong photographer, Jolans Fung, photography is like magic, turning skyscrapers into roaring monsters, striking the sky through his lenses. If photographic works were the eyes of the photographers, you could discover over 200 works from the Greater China showcasing their gentleness, anger, puzzlement and, most importantly, caring eyes with the hope to change the world. The curators of this exhibition have esteemed personalities in the field. Mr. Joseph Fung had been the Associate Professor and Photography Program Leader in School of Design of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University for over 25 years. He was one of the curators of the “Contemporary Photography from Mainland China, Hong Kong & Taiwan” in 1994. Curator from Mainland China Ms Li Mei was the publisher as well as editor for various important photography magazines in China, such as Modern Photography 《現代攝影》 and Focus《焦點》. She was awarded “Curator of the Year” at the "Lianzhou International Photo Festival" in 2005. Taiwanese curator Mr. Chou Ching Hui’s first long-term photography project, “Halted Time – Mafeng Village Recollections” was exhibited in Taipei Fine Arts Museum and Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography in 1995 and 1996 respectively, this collection was recorded in the publication series called Taiwan Photographers 《台灣攝影家群像》. As an artist, Mr. Chou is very active in curatorial works, photographic creation, design and publishing. With joint forces, the three curators will make this exhibition a platform for cultural exchange for Greater China thus making Hong Kong the hub in international photography.
