With contemporary artist Yao Jui-Chung’s series, Mini Meme, as the creative core, Mount Ecstasy extends from Yao’s peculiar observations and whimsical imaginings of Taiwanese society, technological development, and history to reconstruct a fictional universe that merges mythical allegory with contemporary society. This universe echoes Mount Meru, a symbol revered in Buddhism and Hinduism as the central axis of the universe, which is transformed into Mount Ecstasy. This contemporary Taiwanese spiritual landscape is a hybrid world that intertwines maritime legends, information illusions, and spiritual parties, presenting a multi-faceted revelry of illusory reality.
With Yao as the original creator and concept director, the artwork is co-created by new media artist Yi Kuo and experimental electronic musician Meuko Meuko Deploying 3D game engine technology and immersive surround sound effects, the work extends the sci-fi mythology and narrative style established in the pair’s previous audiovisual performances, Invisible General and Ghost Island and reinterprets the scenes and characters from the paintings in the series, Mini Meme. This site-specific work designed for the immersive projection venue, U-108 SPACE, invites viewers to enjoy an experience that blends mythical imaginings and audiovisual illusions from a first-person perspective.
Creative & Production Team
YAO Jui-Chung│Original Creator, Concept Director
Born in 1969 in Taipei, Taiwan, Yao Jui-Chung graduated from the Taipei National University of the Arts in 1994. His works have been widely exhibited in international biennials and triennials, including in Venice, Yokohama, Brisbane, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Seoul, Manchester, Sydney, Taipei, Jakarta, Poland, Macau, and other locations. Winner of the New Photographer Award at the Taipei Photography Festival, Multitude Foundation Art Prize (Hong Kong), APB Foundation Signature Art Prize People’s Choice Award (Singapore), Taishin Arts Award (Taiwan), and the ECC Video & Digital Art Award from the European Cultural Centre in Italy, Yao’s works examine a wide range of themes, primarily exploring the absurdity of the human condition. Known for employing humor in his early works to subvert orthodoxy and using photography installations to present a delusive and alienated “cold reality” that’s specific to Taiwan, Yao continues to explore “the irredeemable absurdity of humanity’s historical destiny.” His recent works explore the “spectacles of desire” found in Taiwanese folk religion in the forms of colossal deity figures and depictions of hell, seeking to capture the distinctive “New Transformationism” observed in Taiwan and present the “materialization of karma.” He created the fictional “Republic of Cynic,” which uses the parasitic host of the Republic of China as a conceptual framework to explore emerging national identities and the shifting dynamics of the new Cold War. Yao curated “Subzoology: 2020 Taiwan Biennial”, and is currently an Adjunct Professor at National Taiwan Normal University and Taipei National University of the Arts.
